Dartmoor ponies
Conservation grazers
As well as a few of our own horses and ponies, each Autumn we have a herd of Dartmoor ponies come to visit. These visitors help with the management of the large block of heather on the top of Challacombe Down. As they prefer to eat the grass, they are helping increase the area covered by heather. The heather as well as being a stunning sight in the late summer, also provides suitable habitat for a range of specialised wildlife, including rare bumblebees.
